Why There Smokers Stay Healthy to Old?

Although health experts have described the dangers of smoking to health, in fact many smokers who continue to smoke until the old and in good health. The team of scientists from the UK managed to uncover the existence of other influential factors, namely genetic factors.
In addition, there are genetic differences that affect whether a person will be addicted to cigarettes or not. Understanding of the known variants of this gene will help doctors perform the treatment of pulmonary diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), as well as helping the success of efforts to quit smoking.
The research team led by Professor Ian Hall from the University of Nottingham found the DNA profiles that decrease the risk of COPD, including bronchitis and emphysema. These genes affect how the lungs expand and responding to injury.
On the other hand, there are also certain DNA that actually increase the risk of COPD so this could explain why some people are affected by this disease although never smoked at all.
Even so, the results of this study do not necessarily become a "green light" for you to continue the habit. "Smoking is the biggest risk factor for COPD disease. Most, but not all, smokers develop the disease. Genetic factors play a role, as does the cigarette addiction or not," he said.
Hall and colleagues also managed to identify five sections of DNA associated with heavy smokers. Parts of it affects brain function in response to nicotine. The study was conducted by analyzing genetic data from the medical profiles of 500,000 people registered between 2006-2010 when they were aged 40-69 years.
