Blood Cancer Can Be Overcome by Drinking Drugs


Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) or chronic granulocytic leukemia (LGK) is a type of blood cancer that can be treated by taking medicine. However, patients should be taking drugs for life despite intensive treatment for 18 months.
"Setelah18 months, eating the drug must be right every day. Baseball is no term stop medicine today. Take the medicine for life," said Specialist Doctors-Consultants Hematology Medical Oncology (SpPD-KHOM) Hilman Tadjoedin in a discussion in Jakarta, Tuesday ( 22.09.2015).
Doctors will continue to monitor to ensure that patients receive appropriate treatment. If the patient is not adherent to take medication, it is feared that resistance occurs must replace second-line drugs.
"If resistance, the drug is taken not provide optimum response. So the treatment was practically useless," explains Doctor of Medical Oncology Hematology Society of Internal Medicine (Perhompedin) it.
He said there are currently four drugs used worldwide to treat CML, namely Imatinib, nilotinib, Dasatinib, and Ponatinib. However, not all drugs used in Indonesia.
"Imatinib, nilotinib in Indonesia. If the west has Dasatinib, nilotinib, ponatinib. Ponatinib was a mainstay in the world community because it can treat the most recalcitrant mutation," said Hilman.
In addition to taking medication, another option is a transplant or bone marrow transplant. According Hilman, to perform the transplant procedure is more effective in patients with CML blood cancer at a young age.
In the same occasion, Chairman of the Indonesian Association of Community Care ELGEKA Mahirudin Achmad said that the blood of CML cancer is not the end of everything. According to him, the discipline of taking medication is one way to get rid of the rare disease. He also hoped the CML treatment access can be evenly distributed in Indonesia.
