How Diabetes Can Cause Blindness?


Diabetes can not be taken lightly, because it can lead to complications of other diseases. One of them, damage to the retina of the eye or commonly known as diabetic retinopathy.
The retina itself is the inner layer of the wall of the eyeball containing nerve cells and serve to catch the light. Ophthalmologist Iwan Sovani of Cicendo Eye Hospital, Bandung, West Java revealed, due to the retina of the eye is not functioning properly, vision becomes blurry to be ended in blindness.
"Could leaking blood vessels, fluid accumulates in the retina so that a moment of vision burem. If it could further bleeding and retinal detachment," said Iwan on the sidelines of The First Indonesian Vitreo-Retina Society (INAVRS) MEETING in Jakarta, Saturday (09/26/2015).
Iwan explained that the increase in blood sugar in patients with diabetes can damage the microvascular system or a small blood vessels throughout the body, including the eyes. The microvascular damage among other things leaking blood vessels, swelling, until rupture.
The risk of diabetic retinopathy increases if the blood sugar is often uncontrolled. The length of a person suffering from diabetes also increases the risk of damage to the retina of the eye.
"Everyone is different-can usually after 5 to 10 years later his eyes so burem diabetes," said Iwan.
Diabetic retinopathy sufferers often only realized when the vision began to blur. If not treated immediately, in time they will be even less clear vision to blindness.
Diabetic retinopathy is expected to rise in 2030, as the increase in people with diabetes. Ophthalmologist Gitalisa Andayani revealed that of the total patients with diabetes are currently about 40 percent will have diabetic retinopathy.
